Battleship Texas BB-35 Here in the shadow of the great monument to the heroes of San Jacinto, is one of the great fighting ships - the battleship which bears the name of the state whose independence was secured on these hallowed grounds. When she was commissioned in 1914, the USS Texas was the most powerful weapon in the world. She is the only surviving U.S. naval vessel to have seen service in both World Wars.
She was decommissioned in 1948 and transferred to the State of Texas.
The ship is huge! I can't even imagine what it would have been like with her crew on board. The stairs are almost straight up and down and the steps are very narrow. There's no way that I could have gone up and down quickly! And the engine room.... on my goodness! Those men must have worn earplugs!
There were 3 kitchens and they even had a fountain coke machine!
To the men that served on the USS Texas...
